What Is the Perfect Watering Schedule for My Newly Overseeded Lawn?

Overseeding is a great way to fill in any bare or patchy spots on your lawn in Pennsylvania and increase its overall density. However, the results do not come overnight. New lawn seeds are fragile and need a lot of water before they can fill in your patches. You need to make sure you are paying close attention to how much water the seeds are getting to make sure that they have the moisture they need to germinate and grow. For the first 4-6 weeks after your overseeding service, you need to follow a diligent watering schedule so that your soil is always moist. After that, you can go back to your normal watering schedule, as the seeds should be strong enough to grow without the additional moisture. By following the watering schedule outlined below, you can help the grass seeds germinate and successfully grow into healthy, beautiful blades of grass.

Water Your Lawn Frequently for 4 to 6 Weeks After Overseeding

After your lawn has been overseeded, you'll want to keep the soil moist at all times to ensure the grass seeds have ideal conditions to grow. New seeds need 1 to 2 inches of water per week. To achieve this, you should water your lawn for 30 minutes in the morning every 2 to 3 days. It should always be in the morning before the sun gets too hot and evaporates and wastes your water supply. It is important that you do not water your lawn after 3 pm - a wet lawn overnight could cause health issues like lawn diseases.

Your grass can receive this amount of water by natural rainfall or supplemental watering via a sprinkler. Pay attention to if your area is getting enough rainfall to supply your soil with the correct amount of moisture. If it isn't, you'll need to break out the sprinkler! In the event of heavy rain, wait 2 to 3 days before resuming your watering schedule.

After 4-6 weeks of this watering schedule, you should see healthy blades grow.

Core aeration is the perfect service to pair with overseeding because the holes created during the aeration process will provide the seeds with excellent seed-to-soil contact.

You Can Go Back to a Normal Watering Schedule 4-6 Weeks After Overseeding

About 1 to 1.5 months after overseeding your lawn, your grass seeds should be well established in your soil, meaning they should have already developed robust root systems. At this point, you can go back to your normal watering schedule. Whatever watering schedule you were using before your lawn was overseeded should be fine to use again. Just make sure that you always keep an eye on your lawn to ensure it's staying properly hydrated throughout the year.
